I believe that it is important to remember the following:

1. The DJ Mag Top 100 is a voted-for competition/ poll – so basically its a popularity contest!
2. Those artists/ DJ’s that are more “popular” are likely to get more votes – simple.

The competition is not about who is the ‘coolest’ DJ, or who is ‘underground’, or who is pushing boundaries, or even who has the best technical abilities! For technical abilities there exists The DMC World DJ Championships, which offer DJ’s with serious technical skills and abilities the opportunity to win in actual DJ battles – so that’s pretty straight up! Pay attention to that for which DJ’s have skills!

If you are concerned about some underground *(insert preferred genre here)* artist that you love not being in the Top 100… consider this – that’s probably a GOOD thing, as it means that person then is truly underground

Consider this: by Guetta taking his style of dance music to the masses in the way that he has, it has really opened it up to other more underground genres being more free to really explore their own sounds and cultures. There are more sub-genres for underground music now than ever before, which ultimately means more choice! Choice means freedom, and freedom is good! … Right? Dance events and parties are taking place all across the globe, and are attracting larger and more diverse crowds than ever before – so surely this is GOOD for our profession?!

With regards to the DJ MAg Top 100, Its very simple, the more votes – the better your chances of winning. David Guetta has sold multiple-millions of albums, has nearly 25 million fans on Facebook, his music is pretty much on constant rotation on radio stations and his music videos are featured on MTV all over the world! In fact these days its pretty hard to escape David Guetta! … Something would probably have to be very wrong indeed if he DIDN’T win this poll. Its often said that people want to knock down those that succeed, and Guetta has certainly succeeded….

If you disagree with the results, or are unhappy that your favorite DJ didn’t win or feature – remember to then actually VOTE for that person next time!! OR – better yet – stop worrying about some silly DJ poll, and go support the artists and DJ’s you love by buying their music, going to their gigs, and supporting them where it really counts – on the DANCEFLOOR!!!!

DJ’s should not be concerned with who ‘gets more votes’, but rather on producing music, and playing the best sets that they can! In the end we (DJ’s) exist to make people dance, and be happy, and celebrate life!

Like I said at the beginning – this is just my opinion, and opinions are subjective… but perhaps this will help shed a little perspective on the situation? Then again, perhaps not … ?

Spreading the positive dance4life virus

People can join the positive dance4life virus and spread it to their friends on www.facebook.dance4life.com. By the end of the campaign more people should be infected with the positive dance4life virus than people actually got infected with HIV during that same period. Daily 7400 people still get infected, which means that until World Aids Day 592.000 people will get infected with HIV. By joining the positive dance4life virus and forwarding it to your friends, the positive message is spread around the globe. Step by step the positive virus will take over the world and beat HIV. By spreading this positive virus, dance4life spreads and shares knowledge about HIV and AIDS to young people, while at the same time challenging stigma and taboos. The campaign is off- and online actions to raise awareness and to make sure as many people as possible join in.

South African and international celebrities spread the positive virus

Several other South African celebrities like Terry Pheto and Jenerik Soulz, CrazE presenter Lee-Roy Wright and celebrity make-up artist Nthato Mashishi joined dance4life to spread the positive dance4life virus. The other South African faces of the campaign are Khabonina Qubeka , Sai & Ribatone, Verd, Jae, Raelene Rorke and DJ Royal K. We join a large number of International celebrities such as top model Doutzen Kroes – Victoria secret… say what – Paul Oakenfold and DJ Chuckie support the campaign as well and actively spread the positive virus all over the world. All of us ask our fans and friends to join us and beat HIV by spreading the positive dance4life virus.

Well it seems as though it is that time of the year where every DJ under the sun seems to start spamming everyone they know (or don’t know to get them to vote for them in the DJ MAG TOP100 DJ poll (www.djmag.com) …

Using Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc. – I don’t think ANYONE is safe from these fame hungry DJ’s, but am I really any different?? I always use all social media and tools to market my events, gigs, albums, tracks, etc. So why SHOULDN’T I also try get voted in??

Lets be honest, its tricky for a DJ from SA to crack that Top 100, all the way down here at the ass-end of Africa, but that’s OK with me! In fact – I LOVE SA – so really who cares??

I know being in the Top 100 brings fame and prestige, but in the end it’s a DJ’s music, passion, and dedication that makes him (or her) great, special and memorable!

So – having said all that – I implore you to NOT vote for me, but to keep your support for me, keep coming to my gigs, keep buying my albums, downloading my mixes, and loving my music! – That’s all a DJ can ever really ever hope to ask!!!
